The weekend of December 6th through 8th will be packed with music, food, entertainment, shopping, parades – and Santa, of course!
Friday night, December 6th The weekend kicks off with Night on the Town at 6 p.m. on Friday. Bay Street will be closed to traffic. Downtown retailers will be open. Roving choirs will be singing Christmas carols and other performers will also be taking the stage as well.
The Community Bible Church Soul Patrol Puppet Team will perform at Bay and Carteret streets. Food will be available along Bay Street from vendors. Parents can bring their kiddies to have their pictures taken with Santa from 6-8 p.m. And, a recital of “The Night Before Christmas” will occur on the main stage just before the Christmas tree lighting culminates the evening around at 8pm
Saturday, December 7th The Gullah Taste of Christmas kicks off at 11 a.m. at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. With live music, a Rice Cookoff, food vendors, a kid’s village and more, the event is a beautiful celebration of Gullah traditions that will have you singing and dancing with joy.
Then, the super-popular Christmas Boat Parade begins at 5:30 p.m. – grab a seat at the park to get a great view.
Sunday, December 8th The annual Christmas Parade, led by Santa and featuring local bands and lots of floats, begins at 3 p.m. in downtown Beaufort.

On Saturday, December 14th at Noon, Wreaths Across America will be at Beaufort National Cemetery to Remember and Honor our veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes and through the act of saying the name of each and every veteran aloud.
Volunteers are needed for the afternoon, and everyone is invited to the ceremony and also to help place the wreaths on as many graves as possible.
More than 26,000 wreaths will be needed to mark the graves of those veterans and family members interred in the cemetery. Beaufort National Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 26,000 military members and their spouses. Those interred represent every conflict from the Civil War to current combat casualties.
The mission of the National Wreaths Across America program is to remember our fallen heroes, honor them, and teach others of the sacrifices they have made for our Country. Started at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992, each year during the holiday season, wreaths are placed on veterans’ grave sites at more than 1,400 locations across the United States, at sea and around the world.
The Beaufort National Cemetery joined the national Wreaths Across America celebration about 18 years ago and has been participating in the Wreaths Across America ceremony ever since.
Over 26,000 wreaths were laid at Beaufort National Cemetery at last year’s Wreaths Across America Day. Before last year, 2019 saw more than 21,000, which had been the most to date.
Numbers are falling behind this year, and every headstone is deserving of a remembrance wreath.

From hundreds of miles away, Hurricane Rafael has brought a deluge of rain to the Hilton Head Island area and across the Southeast. The cyclone plowed through Cuba as a Category 3 storm Wednesday night before spilling westbound into the Gulf of Mexico and weakening slightly.
Beaufort and Jasper counties were placed under a hazardous weather outlook around noon Thursday, and inland Jasper County was under a flood watch until 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service’s Charleston office. “A period of persistent and heavy rainfall” Thursday afternoon could bring localized flooding to the two counties and portions of Georgia, meteorologists said.
Some inland areas of Georgia and South Carolina, including Jasper County, received eight to 10 inches of rain overnight, according to an NWS briefing at 11 a.m. Thursday. Beaufort County and its southern neighbors were expected to see an additional 1.5-2.5 inches Thursday and possible “dense fog” Thursday night into early Friday.
Jasper County officials said the overnight rainfall resulted in “unsafe roads in parts of the county” and warned residents to not drive through water-covered routes. Conditions could also bring washouts to certain roadways, according to a Thursday morning alert.
Police and fire personnel from Beaufort and Jasper counties said they were not aware of any road closures as of 1 p.m. Thursday. Stephen Combs, a spokesperson for the Bluffton Township Fire District, said Thursday afternoon crews had responded to a handful of non-serious collisions caused by hydroplaning vehicles.
Chance of rain in the Beaufort area will drop below 20% beginning 11 p.m. Thursday and below 10% Friday afternoon, forecasts say. A cold front is expected to move into the Southeast on Friday, bringing isolated showers.
As of 10 a.m. Thursday, Rafael remained a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Initial projections saw the storm heading towards Louisiana and the U.S. Gulf Coast, but beginning midweek the cyclone shifted to its current westward path over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.
Rafael is the 17th named storm of the 2024 hurricane season, which concludes at the end of November.

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for our veterans and their service to America. In celebration, the Beaufort County Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting the 2024 Veterans Day Parade through downtown Beaufort on Monday, November 11th.
The parade will begin with the lineup of floats, bands and civic groups at 830am by the Beaufort National Cemetery and officially starts at 10am. It will follow the traditional route and end at the intersection of Boundary and Bladen Streets after a full “loop,” covering Boundary, Carteret, Bay and Bladen Streets.
This year’s parade Grand Marshalls will be local veterans Sergeants Major James and Gwendolyn Moore USMC (Retired).
Sergeant Major James Moore
A native of Sandersville, GA, now of Seabrook, Sergeant Major James Moore was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in June 1969 and served with the Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His last assignment was Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and Eastern Recruiting Region Sergeant Major. He was the first black Marine to hold this position.
Sergeant Major Moore’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal gold star in lieu of 2nd award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Mr. Moore currently serves as the Senior Pastor of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Dale, SC, is a member of the executive board of the Old Ashley Baptist Association, a member of the Beaufort County Ministerial Alliance and former National Chaplain of the Montford Point Marine Association. In addition, he is Chairman of the Pathways in STEP, Chairman of the Sheldon Township Community Support Partnership and serves on the Board of Directors for the Drill Instructor Association and Parris Island Museum and Historical Society.
Sergeant Major Gwendolyn Moore
Sergeant Major Gwendolyn Moore enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in September 1973. After graduation from Parris Island, Sergeant Moore’s military career took her to California, Japan, Quantico and back to Japan. Ssgt Moore served as Drill Instructor at USMCRD Parris Island, rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and then Chief Drill Instructor.
Sergeant Major Moore’s decorations include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorius Unit Commendation, Drill Instructor Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.
In last year’s parade, more than 40 community groups and individuals submitted applications to participate with floats, bands or walking groups.
Every community group, children’s group, civic organization, and community member is encouraged to show their community spirit and our veterans how much they are appreciated.

Sucheros Fresh Mex is one of the tenants that is setting up shop at the center, and it had originally announced that the restaurant had planned to open on November 19th.
As of October 29th, that has now been delayed.
We received an email from Surcheros contracted marketing firm letting us know that the opening of the restaurant has been delayed until sometime in 2025.
The reason we were given is due to construction delays.
When it does finally open, the new Surcheros in Beaufort will be the first location in South Carolina for the growing, Georgia-based Tex-Mex chain.
With over 30 locations across Florida and Georgia, Surcheros is celebrated for its fresh, Mexican-inspired offerings, featuring customizable burritos, bowls, tacos, nachos, quesadillas, salads and more.
In early 2024, the chain announced plans to open 100 restaurants within the next five years. The company expects to open 15 to 20 locations by the end of 2025.
The 209,250 square foot shopping center with outparcels on the corner of Robert Smalls Parkway and Paris Island Gateway is home to a variety of businesses that are new to Beaufort, SC as well as a couple that have moved across the highway to enjoy the new digs.
Among tenants that have opened at the new shopping center are PetSmart, TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Five Below, and Rack Room Shoes, Hobby Lobby, Ross Dress for Less, Ulta Beauty, and Old Navy.
Joining Surcheros in Beaufort as new neighbors will be Chicken Salad Chick, Le Nails, Panda Express, Surcheros Fresh Mex, Mattress Warehouse, America’s Best, a Parker’s Kitchen and a Parker’s Car Wash.
“Beaufort is a beautiful community, and growing, but underserved in retail,” said Jeff Surrency, executive vice president of development at The Morgan Companies, the developers of Beaufort Station.
“We continue to attract high quality tenants for this project, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Trey Morgan, President of The Morgan Companies. “This is not only a testament to great real estate, but a growing, vibrant community as well.”
