SOCASTEE, S.C. (WBTW) — The 7-year-old son of Socastee High School’s head football coach is battling a rare form of leukemia, and many people in Horry County are showing their support.
Atticus Hampton, the son of coach Ben Hampton, has acute myeloid leukemia, a blood and bone marrow cancer that makes too many immature white blood cells.
In late September, Atticus had a low-grade fever and a stomach ache that would not go away. His parents took him to a pediatrician and then to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He is now at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Within about a week, the Hampton family went from thinking Atticus had a virus to knowing he had leukemia.
“He’s the kid that walks in the room and brightens up the whole room,” his father said. “I mean, his smile is infectious. He doesn’t meet a stranger, you know? Really, he is more concerned about the whole as opposed to himself.”
Just like his dad, Atticus loves football. However, his passions are baseball and his Little League team, the Pirates.
Friends of the Hampton family recorded the team’s last game of the season because Atticus insisted on watching it from his hospital bed. He also watched his teammates cheer him on.
“To be going through what he’s going through, and his priority was, ‘How are my teammates doing?’ and ‘I want to watch my teammates play baseball,'” Ben said. “You know, it’d be real easy to feel pity for himself and, ‘Oh, I don’t want to watch it because I’m not able to be out there.’ But that’s not him.”
Atticus hads already gone through his first round of chemotherapy, and he will go through a second round in a few weeks. In the new year, he will have a bone marrow transplant.
To show their support, St. James High School and Socastee High School are hosting a bone marrow donation drive at their football game on Friday.
“We would push anybody that’s interested to get swabbed, get tested, get in the registry because you never know who you can help,” Ben said. “While it may not be Atticus, there’s somebody out there looking for a donor, and you could be the answer.”
Horry County has shown overwhelming support for Atticus, with Coastal Carolina University football players visiting him at MUSC and Socastee High School having a Trunk-or-Treat fundraiser for him and his family.
Other community members have worn orange bracelets that read “Play Like Atticus.” Many have checked in on his sister, Lily, who is his best friend. They have also sent Bible verses to his parents.
“We just want to say ‘thank you’ to everybody, from the medical staffs that we’ve encountered through this journey, to the people who we don’t even know that have offered support,” Ben said. “You know, like I said, I don’t think we could ever thank everybody and tell them what it truly means.”
The Hampton family has a GoFundMe for Atticus to help pay for gas and food. You can also send Atticus books and dinosaurs to make his hospital room feel like home.
But most of all, the Hamptons ask for prayers as Atticus fights the disease.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, their child being diagnosed with cancer.
Right now, Catherine and Ben Hampton are living it firsthand - but it‘s their community in Socastee that’s helping them through this tough time.
“You take a little boy that is zero to 100 by the time he wakes up every morning. And that tachometer stays full-go until he lays his head down a pillow at night,” said Ben Hampton. “And, you know, put him in a bed in a room and tell him he really can’t go anywhere.”
That’s what’s happened since 7-year-old Atticus was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
It started as what his parents thought was a normal virus and has since landed them at MUSC in Charleston, where they’ve been since late September.
“I think the best term for it is you kind of feel numb,” said Ben.
His parents weren’t the only ones shocked by the diagnosis.
Atticus’s baseball coach, Joe Burnett, couldn’t believe it.
“It hit me like a ton of bricks,” said Burnett. “It caught me out of left field. Didn’t expect it at all, and I stopped work for the day. I just went home.”
His teacher, Sarah Elliott had a similar reaction.
“It’s just like, you don’t believe it. You can’t really fathom it. I didn’t really take it fully in until the day I saw him in the hospital,” she said.
Atticus immediately began a round of intense chemotherapy and now they’re waiting for his blood count to improve so they can send him home for a short break.
Elliott got to see him during that chemo and says it helped her.
“He was still him and he was able to smile and talk and laugh with us. And I could give him a hug. That was relieving,” she said.
Atticus also hasn’t lost the spark of a kid who loves baseball and does what he can to help others.
“I can picture him now getting out of his mom’s car, his mom is still parking the car and he’s running up with his catcher’s gear, running up here because he doesn’t want to miss a second of playing ball,” said Burnett.
“He kind of just observed a little boy needing help and he just stepped in and did it himself,” said Elliott. “And that’s definitely who he is. He just observes a need, says I can do that, and just does it.”
His parents told WMBF News that he’s still watching his favorite sports, like college football, and has a good attitude.
Hearing that didn’t surprise Burnett.
“To hear that he’s doing good with his battle makes complete sense to me because that’s just the kind of kid he is. He’s a fighter,” he said.
Atticus’s parents said they believe this fight will make him stronger.
“While it’s hard to wrap your mind around a seven-year-old little boy going through this, I can only imagine the strength and courage that’s going to give him to proceed forward,” said Ben Hampton.
Catherine is the principal at Burgess Elementary School and Ben is the football coach at Socastee High School.
Between their schools, their church, and the entire community, the family has felt the love.
It’s something they know they’ll continue to need.
“We know that it will be a long road ahead of us, anywhere from 18 to 24 months. We’ve got a long journey ahead of us, so we are very grateful for that support,” said Catherine Hampton.
His parents have also created the saying “Play Like Atticus” because of how much he loves playing sports.
Once Atticus’s blood count goes up, the family will spend a week back home. After that, the family will return to Charleston for another round of intense chemotherapy.
If all goes well, he’ll then begin the process of a bone marrow transplant.
