If you had to choose, what would you say is the most important part of the home you're living in? Some people might point to the kitchen where you eat your meals. Others might choose the living room, where family gatherings and Sunday night football stays on the TV. When it comes to roofing, emergencies can strike without warning and demand prompt action to prevent further damage while safeguarding your property. A roofing emergency is a situation that needs immediate, professional attention to avert additional harm to your roof, your property, your family, or your assets. These emergencies can create safety hazards, endanger your roof's structural integrity, and lead to water infiltration, which can result in additional damage and even mold sickness.
Examples of a roofing emergency may include
Any signs of structural damage to the roof-including sagging, bowing, or visible cracks-should be treated as a roofing emergency. Such damage can jeopardize the roof's stability and create safety hazards for everyone in the building. If you find yourself in such a situation, call a roofing company in Surfside Beach, SC like Ashley River Roofing immediately. That way, we can assess the extent of your roof damage and implement the necessary measures to prevent further deterioration or potential collapse of your roof.
If a large part of your roofing materials-like shingles, tiles, or membranes-is missing, out of place, or exposed, it's classified as a roofing emergency. When roofing materials are left unprotected, your roof can become susceptible to water leaks, UV damage, and other harsh elements, which can lead to further wear and tear.
Severe weather events like high winds, hailstorms, and heavy snowfall can cause serious damage to your roof. This might include issues such as damaged shingles or tiles, tears in the membrane, or even structural problems. If your roof has faced harsh weather and you notice signs of damage-like visible cracks, missing or shifted roofing materials or leaks-you've got a roofing emergency on your hands. Immediate attention is necessary to prevent further complications.
When it comes to installing a new roof for your home, getting the job done right the first time out is crucial. That's why it's important to hire licensed professionals who can navigate the intricate and demanding process involved with replacing your roof. When Do Property Owners in South Carolina Need to Replace Their Roofs?
At Ashley River Roofing, one of the most frequent questions we receive is, "How can I tell when it's time to replace my roof?" This isn't always a straightforward answer, as each roofing structure and replacement situation is unique. Roofs face harsh weather conditions-such as intense heat, strong winds, freezing temperatures, and heavy rain-that can wear down their protective layers. While some roofs can last for up to 25 years, shingles and other materials can deteriorate over time, becoming brittle, cracked, torn, or even disintegrated.
If you're wondering when you should replace the roof on your home or business, keep these red flags in mind:
You'll need a decent view of your roof to check for these signs. Always use caution when using a ladder or getting on top of your roof. Curling and cupping, which often look similar, occur when the edges of your shingles start to lift and curl upwards. Meanwhile, clawing is characterized by the center of a shingle rising while the ends remain fixed to the roof. None of these signs are positive, so if you notice them, it might be time to schedule a roof inspection.
A sagging roof usually means there's an underlying structural issue plaguing your home. These hazards often necessitate replacing your roof. This problem usually stems from water damage or a compromised rafter. It's crucial to bring in a licensed and insured roofing company, such as Ashley River Roofing, to take care of the situation. To accurately assess the problem, the contractor may need to strip away the shingles and the plywood sheathing underneath.
If you're driving through your neighborhood and see one or more roofing contractors working, take some time to check your own roof. Homes in the same area are often built around the same time, using similar materials purchased in bulk by the builder. This means that the roofs of these houses usually wear out at a comparable pace. So, if you notice your neighbors getting their roofs replaced, it might be time for you to think about doing the same.
How old is your roof? If it's over 25 years old, it's likely nearing the end of its life. Typically, an asphalt roof lasts around 20 to 25 years. Once you've passed that mark, it's wise to start thinking about replacing your aging roof.
It may sound surprising, but checking for signs of disrepair inside your home can be just as important as inspecting the exterior. Spaces like your attic often reveal damage more clearly than those outside. Start by grabbing a strong flashlight and carefully look for any water streaks, stains, or drips. Additionally, keep an eye out for beams of light coming through your roof. If you notice any of these indicators, it's likely that your roof has leaks and may need to be replaced.
Are you searching for a reliable roofing contractor to protect your most valuable asset? At Ashley River Roofing, we take great pride in our craftsmanship and unwavering dedication to our customers. As a family-owned business, we understand how crucial your roof is for your family's safety. We also recognize that budgets can be tight.

A house fire, ambulance call or vehicle accident may soon cost victims in Surfside Beach.
The Surfside Beach town council is moving toward adding a litany of fees that can be charged by the town’s fire department when they arrive on the scene.
The council gave unanimous first reading approval to a host of accident response fees that range from hundreds of dollars when a fire truck shows up to $5 for putting out a traffic cone at an accident scene. The list also includes a minimum $100 fee when the department is called to lift an elderly or injured person who has fallen and can’t get up on their own.
Other various charges call for, among other items and services, paying for ladders and hoses that are used and extricating victims from vehicles.
The fee system was suggested by town Fire Chief David Nelson who told the council that it was a means of bringing in more revenue to the fire department coffers. Nelson said he would like to use the new revenue for training facility purposes.
For town residents, the fees would be in addition to the taxes that residents already pay.
Council member William Kinken said he would prefer the money be put into the town’s general fund as a specific line item otherwise, “it is turning into a slush fund.”
Council member Shawn Fallon said the fee structure is a way for a small town to get money back.
In the same meeting, Nelson told the council that with improvements in the department over the last six months, he did not think the town should turn over operation of its fire department to Horry County.
Nelson said the fees would be billed to residents’ car or home insurance companies or to the victims themselves if they were not a Surfside Beach resident.
“This won’t affect the residents’ or businesses’ insurance rates,” Nelson said.
But according to the South Carolina Insurance Association, that is not necessarily the case.
Insurance policies are a contract between an individual and the company, the association said in a specific newsletter regarding accident response fees. Third party vendors lack the legal standing to require such fees directly from insurance companies.
The report continued, “Actual losses and claims are a major factor in determining rates. If insurance companies were required to cover these fees, they would include the cost of such fees in future rate requests.”
Accident response fees are banned in 14 states, including Georgia and Florida.
Horry County only charges for ambulance transports and has no other fire fees. Conway does not have an ambulance and a spokesperson said the city does not charge for any fire services.
Nelson said, if approved, the department would use the company PA Fire Recovery Service out of Pennsylvania. It’s the company’s list of fees that is attached to the town ordinance that would be used.
The third party would get 15% of everything they collect, Nelson explained. Billing would be determined by sending reports to the company and it would not require an extra town employee to keep up with the fees.
PA Fire Recovery System’s website says the average recovery fee is $1,043.72. Company information also says it can bill individuals if an insurance company refuses to pay.
Company officials said Surfside Beach would be the first South Carolina department to use its service.
The company’s owner Shawn Meder said he first met Nelson when Nelson was the chief of the Whitehall Township volunteer fire department in Pennsylvania.
The ordinance must receive a second reading approval by the town council before the fees are put in place.

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — After months of debate, the Surfside Beach fire chief said during Tuesday’s town council meeting the department will not transfer control of the town’s services to Horry County.
The topic was in talks back in April when chief David Nelson announced the agency was understaffed and unable to protect the community.
When Nelson joined the department, he says the decision to bring in the county was a matter of safety. But since then, he says the department has made several changes thanks to additional funding.
Nelson says each shift now has four personnel instead of the two it had before.
He says because Horry County offered four personnel to a shift and Surfside can now offer the same, a transfer isn’t needed.
During budget talks in June, the town set aside funds to hire seven full-time and five part-time firefighters.
He says if it did make the switch, it would have increased taxes for Surfside residents.
Nelson says it’s important to him they kept the department to maintain a presence in their community.
“And you would lose that stance of where our guys are within the town and knowing the people and stuff like that,” Nelson said. “Horry County seems to move their people around and stuff like that and there’s nothing wrong with that. But that’s the way they do it and so you don’t get that hometown feel.”
Town officials also voted against a $22,000 evaluation to look into mold in its civic center, which is where it holds town council meetings.
A report showed that the town’s civic center has mold in its insulation and in some office spaces.
This is the second time the town has had to deal with these kinds of issues, the first coming in 2021 after demolishing the former town hall and council chambers last year and moving to the current site across the street.
It says for now, it will look into whether they want to build a whole new building or not, or potentially “rehab” the current site.
